Claude Code, Codex, or a LangGraph agent runs inside an isolated runtime that can pause when idle and come back with the workspace and conversation still there.
resume takes 316ms, and you don't pay while the session is paused.
Long-running coding agents naturally alternate between execution and dead time. They work, wait for a human, work again, then sit overnight. Keeping a VM alive wastes money. Killing it usually means reconstructing state.
Managed Agents is basically separating persistent agent state from continuously running compute.
