The Trump administration's plan for a FINRA-style AI oversight body has stalled before reaching President Trump.
The Information reports senior-level support has not come together.
For the context, after the June voluntary testing framework, officials circulated a separate draft executive order to create a FINRA-like AI self-regulator that would oversee frontier-model pre-release testing.
But this new executive order itself has not secured senior White House and presidential buy-in.
The stall therefore leaves the existing voluntary framework as Washington's current mechanism, even as its implementation remains opaque to much of the industry.
So, now the fight now centers on whether an external body can make a failed assessment block a U.S. release. That distinction determines who controls the launch calendar. Under a voluntary system the lab keeps the final say; a FINRA-style regime would transfer part of that authority outside the company.
