China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the agency that oversees tech standards and industrial policy, has issued a notice targeting Claude Code. MIIT said its cybersecurity threat-monitoring platform found that Claude Code contains a built-in monitoring mechanism that can send sensitive information back to remote servers without user consent. It advised government-related units to delete affected software or code. These notices are often less about direct enforcement and more about signaling Beijing’s attitude toward a specific company. In practice, it amounts to an official boycott. In a way, Anthropic’s loud posture has made it increasingly persona non grata in China.
